Square Smoke and Lights in Fresh Install

Post by kevinli9935 »

Hi there! I just discovered that all the smoke effects and lights became squares from yesterday, and there's no any difference even I uninstalled everything and did a clean installation. What could be the problem? Thanks!

Hello Kevin,

The General Debugging Steps (linked below) are an excellent starting point for problem resolution.

Hi!

These steps are exactly what I’m following, and the problem exist even the P3D is fresh.

The only thing happened before it went down is that my Win11 updated itself. I’m not sure if it is because of this. Thanks!

Kevin

I am on WIN11 and no problems.

Which version / Build of WIN11 are your using?

Which P3D product / full version number?

Hi!

Thanks and I found the reason. When returning the nVidia Driver from 516.40 to 512.95, everything seems working fine. Maybe there's a incompatibility behind them?

Anyway, I can start enjoying my sim now.

Kevin,

Thanks for the follow up.
I am using:

No problems to report at this time.

Glad to hear your problem is resolved.

Hey Kevin,

I know you already found the solution but here are some more reports of the issue on Avsim forum:
https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/6206 ... 0-problem/

For the future I recommend always waiting a few days after a new driver is released and watching Avsim / LM forums for negative reports on the new driver version. It happens from time to time that a particular graphics driver version has issues working with P3D or other sim's. But nothing to worry about, it always gets fixed quite fast by Nvidia.

Regards :)

I too can also confirm that this is a driver issue.

I reverted back to the older driver and it fixed this problem.
I only wish they'd fix other problems already with shimmering/AA. It's pretty annoying.

Hello Kevin,

I finally seen the black square problem you reported (Nvidia 516.40) on a wingtip while panning around the outside view.

The latest Nvidia drivers is not compatible with Prepar3d, solution is to go back to previous driver version.

The problem is with effects, flashing as squares. Very noticeable on NAV-lights and waves.

I hope LM is aware of this issue, as no long term solution to use an older driver.

Any incompatibility is not - repeat, NOT - with P3D itself, otherwise I would have seen it too.....

And yes, I have 516.40 and have been running it since June 15th, when it came out. If this driver really was incompatible with P3D, every single user of P3D with nVidia and this driver would have seen it.

I verified the problem on my setup.

I am using:
Win11

Nvidia (driver only) 516.40

How did you test it?

With a lot of different airport and aircraft - including the default ones - and the same P3D version.

But under Windows 10 21H2.

I spoke a bit too soon.

When the graphics card is heavily loaded, I see black squares off the wingtips with 516.40. Normally they do not appear.

I will roll back and see what happens.
